Capstone Video Script and Editor Quests

This week, we have been asked to create 90 second video scripts for our capstones, and decide on an editor we might use for creating these videos.  As one would expect, several challenges and factors impacted the decision making processes around both of these tasks.

To start, we were shown an incredibly creative, humorous, eccentric example that really opened the door for us to use our imaginations and get artistic with our own videos.  The video made me laugh, but I also wanted to cry a little bit because I am nowhere near the level of skill and ingenuity of that video! While I’m so glad that the sky is the limit with this project, perhaps my actual limits are a bit closer to the curb.

Some of my limitations that have contributed to the process I’ve worked through this week regarding my video:
  • Skill.  I don’t have much experience yet with too many different programs or even storytelling.
  • Time.  I don’t have much time to learn and experiment in order to produce something fancy.
  • Cash. Some editing programs are costly and I’m broke!
  • Imagination.  I am about as close to being 100% left brained as a person can be.  I think linearly and need concrete steps to follow in order to be successful. Lack of imagination definitely impedes a process that is supposed to be creative in nature.  I know, growth mindset--I’m trying!

Now for the positives!  The following pros have helped me resolve some issues and move forward in the creation of my script and selecting a movie editing program:
  • On Wednesday night, Jane showed us her own capstone video, which was pretty straightforward and a great example on the other end of the spectrum. This example was great to help me realize that anything in between the two exemplars would work.
  • The remaining capstone video examples shared on this week's iCare also provided a wide range of skill and style.  Viewing these videos also opened up my mind for possibilities.
    • I was able to visualize a straight forward “problem & solution” style video script that would help me to summarize the most important parts of my work.
  • About two weeks ago, I was able to attend an iPad training which gave me a beginner’s glimpse at the iMovie app, and how simple it looks.
  • Fabulous resources for storytelling in this week's iCare!  I will be implementing all of the advice gained from these articles, especially Digital Storytelling "Elements of Digital Storytelling."
  • I also liked the tutorials for iMovie provided in the iCare--especially the one for beginners.  It also prompted me to find more YouTube iMovie tutorials. I will try to find the time to play with special features to add some creativity to my video!
    • I might use this to produce my video, or parts of it.
  • We have had the opportunity to gain considerable experience with Adobe this year during the program.
    • I might also use Adobe, mixed with iMovie to produce my video.

I hope this discussion has been helpful to you, and has contributed to your process as well!  Good luck!

Jona, If you are at the curb, than what am I? You had me cracking up with that one. I exact your sentiment almost verbatim except for the knowledge of Mac usage. I am not sure what I will use except my phone because I don't have Mac products. I hope that we will all be able to share ideas and get some tips as to exactly what some options are to execute this loft task. Thank you for your insight. You always have a clear and concise way of explaining in your writing. You are an amazing story teller.
